Quick Answer

Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia's most visa-friendly countries for remote workers. The EB (Business) visa + extensions allows stays of 3–12 months with minimal bureaucracy. Costs are low, enforcement is light, and the process is straightforward. Monthly costs in Phnom Penh: $600–1,000/month. Siem Reap is cheaper. Internet is adequate in Phnom Penh and improving elsewhere.

Visa Options

E-Visa (Tourism, 30 days)

Available at evisa.gov.kh. Cost: $36 USD. 30 days, single entry. Processing 3 business days. Available to most nationalities.

For most short stays (1–2 months), this is the starting point: E-Visa on arrival or e-visa, then extend once.

EB Visa (Business) — Best for Remote Workers

The EB visa is Cambodia's practical long-stay option. Available on arrival at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap international airports, or extended from a tourist entry.

  • Duration: 30 days initially, extendable
  • Cost: $35 USD on arrival
  • Extensions: 1 month ($45), 3 months ($75), 6 months ($135), 12 months ($285)
  • Business visa extensions: Handled by guesthouses/hotels or visa agents — you do not need to visit immigration yourself in most cases

The 12-month EB extension at $285 ($23.75/month) is one of the cheapest long-stay options in Asia.

Note: The "business" label does not require evidence of business activity in Cambodia. It is the standard mechanism used by digital nomads and long-term expats.

Cambodia as a Remote Work Destination

Phnom Penh: Cambodia's capital and best base for remote work. Small city by Asian standards (population ~2.5 million), functional infrastructure, improving coworking scene (Factory Phnom Penh, The Factory, Workspace1), affordable. Strong expat community.

Siem Reap: Home to Angkor Wat — the world's largest religious monument complex. Strong tourism infrastructure, affordable, quieter than Phnom Penh. Coworking limited. Good for 2–4 week stays around Angkor exploration; less ideal as a primary work base.

Cost of living: Phnom Penh monthly $600–1,000 mid-range. Cambodia is a dollarised economy — prices quoted in USD everywhere, and Wise USD balance works seamlessly.

Internet: Improving. Smart and Metfone are the main mobile networks. 4G coverage in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Home broadband: Metfone and Smart deliver 25–100 Mbps in Phnom Penh. Dial Airalo eSIM for pre-arrival data.

Bottom Line

Cambodia's EB visa + annual extension = 13 months for $320 total in visa costs. One of Asia's easiest long-stay setups. Phnom Penh as your base, Siem Reap for Angkor, and easy access to Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos by bus or flight.
